Jasper's Restaurant Scene

• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide for Jasper, Alberta.
Once a small, remote fur trading post, Jasper has become a vibrant alpine village bustling with sports enthusiasts and visitors all year round. Situated at the end of the Icefields Parkway, west of Edmonton and north of Banff, Jasper lies at the heart of Jasper National Park in Alberta's Rocky Mountains. Its enduring natural beauty and quiet, secluded location continues to draw millions of visitors each year. As the tourism industry has grown, the town has responded with warmth and hospitality, building world-class accommodations, offering exhilarating adventures and creating a complex culinary scene, suited to any budget.

Jasper's restaurants and bars are concentrated in the main part of town on Connaught Drive, Patricia Street and Geikie Street, between Cedar Avenue to the north and Hazel Avenue to the south. Wandering leisurely through town to choose an eatery is a delightful part of the dining experience.

A HEARTY MOUNTAIN BREAKFAST

Getting a big, nutritious breakfast to prepare for a day of adventure is easy at the many convenient bakeries, delis, cafes and family restaurants around town. Anthony's Restaurant is well known for its morning breakfast buffet. Children especially enjoy that its location on Connaught Drive gives them the opportunity to watch Canadian Pacific Railway trains passing through Jasper's train yards.

Buckles Restaurant in Maligne Lodge offers a full spread, from simple continental choices to a traditional Canadian-style breakfast complete with maple syrup-smothered pancakes, crispy back bacon, whole wheat toast and eggs done any style.

AN ENERGIZING LUNCH

Visitors exploring the rugged landscape are often anxious to stay on the go. Mountain explorers have long known that the best way to sustain energy levels is to stop for small meals and snacks throughout the day. Adventurers can pack a morning snack then stop at one of many convenient eateries for a light lunch. Healthy selections such as salads, sandwiches, soups and stews are always available.

A peaceful lunch can be enjoyed at Maligne Lake View Restaurant, perched on the water's edge. In winter visitors will appreciate the stunning view of the frozen lake from the restaurant's bay windows, while in summer the turquoise lake is best viewed from the spacious sundecks. Enjoy home-style fare with healthy selections as well as treats made in the on-site bakery that can be packed up to provide plenty of fuel for the rest of the day's activities.

SWEET TREATS TO STAY OR SNACKS TO GO

Fruits are not easily grown in the harsh climate of the Rockies, with the exception of berries; miniature strawberries, plump raspberries and flavourful currents can be found throughout Alberta's Rockies and rolling foothills. These small, hardy fruits are often combined with locally grown whole grains and real Canadian maple syrup to make a variety of desserts on offer in Jasper's many cafes and bakeries.

Get a quick burst of energy from homemade cookies, bars and squares, which can be easily packed away, or sit down to a slice of chocolate cake, berry crumble or apple crisp at the Seasons Cafe. This intimate cafe offers a variety of specialty coffees and baked goods made from scratch to be enjoyed in the snug, cozy atmosphere.

A HOME-STYLE ROCKIES DINNER

After a long day of adventure, relax in one of Jasper's many restaurants. Though there are a variety of eateries, most menus are influenced by the history and landscape of the Rocky Mountains. First Nations people and then later European explorers relied on the land for sustenance; their experiences and knowledge of the most flavourful and nutritious foods have been passed down through generations. Today, chefs in Alberta's Rockies continue to rely on local knowledge and cultivate relationships with local producers to garner the freshest and most flavourful ingredients from the surrounding area. Wild game is a staple and often the basis of meals; elk and bison are popular as well as deer, pheasant and salmon. The deep flavours of wild game are strengthened by wild rice and hearty root vegetables grown close by in the rolling foothills.

There are many casual dining spots around town that offer good food, including pizza parlours, steakhouses and family restaurants as well as upscale establishments that specialize in Canadian and international fare. Embers Steakhouse in Marmot Lodge serves diverse cuisine, from Alberta AAA Beef to grilled seafood dishes. Meals are made even more enjoyable by the opportunity to gaze out over Jasper's mountain-scape. Atmosphere is also key at the Silverwater Grill in Chateau Jasper. The natural décor is warm and inviting, while the sound of the waterfalls soothes diners as they peruse the menu of contemporary cuisine, including beef tenderloin, seafood and pasta.

Diners at Walter's Dining Room will enjoy exploring the award-winning menu, which offers Canadian dishes with native influences. Since the chef relies heavily on local ingredients, the menu changes seasonally. Wild game, fowl and fish are complemented by the best of each season.

A DRINK AFTER HOURS

Wine country is just on the other side of the Rockies, in the temperate climate of southern British Columbia, and microbreweries are sprinkled throughout the Rockies. Albertan restaurateurs use these local products to complement the complex flavours of their menus.

A greater variety of alcoholic beverages can be found in the lounges, nightclubs, pubs and sports bars around town. Kick back at the Whistle Stop Pub, which is popular with both locals and visitors. Relax in front of the large fireplace, play a game of pool, pick out a favourite tune on the jukebox or catch an evening of live music. Sports enthusiasts will enjoy a relaxing evening at Champs Sports Lounge. On the night of a big game this location is packed with patrons vying for a good view of the big screen, and on quieter nights, guests can enjoy karaoke or live music while sampling the classic and contemporary martini menu.
